Reformer FAQs

  • How often should I do reformer Pilates?

This depends on your goals, but most people see benefits from doing Pilates 2–3 times per week.

If you’re looking to build strength, improve mobility, or create a consistent routine, you may choose to do shorter sessions more frequently.

One of the advantages of having a reformer at home is flexibility; even 10–20 minutes can be effective when done consistently.

  • What’s the difference between mat Pilates and reformer Pilates?

Both mat Pilates and reformer Pilates focus on core strength, control, and movement quality.

Reformer Pilates uses a machine with springs and pulleys to provide adjustable resistance and support. This allows for a wider range of exercises, and can make movements more accessible or more challenging depending on your level.

Reformer Pilates may be a good option if you:

    • want more support when learning technique
    • are returning from injury or working within a limited range of movement
    • prefer guided, structured workouts
    • want to progressively increase resistance over time

Mat Pilates can still be highly effective, but the reformer offers more versatility and progression, particularly for at-home training.

  • I’ve never used a Pilates reformer before. How will I know what to do?

One of the biggest reasons people choose Freedom is because you’re not left to “figure it out” alone.

Every reformer purchase includes access to Freedom On Demand, where we guide you step-by-step through setup, getting started, and building confidence with your equipment.

We also offer personalised onboarding support so you can feel comfortable from day one - even if you’ve never stepped foot in a Pilates studio before.

  • Does Pilates build muscle?

The short answer is yes, but, but not massive ones!

The long answer is: Pilates is solid at building muscular endurance and can improve strength if you challenge yourself enough, but it can be more limited at building muscle mass or size.

Pilates builds endurance, strength, and flexibility simultaneously, resulting in muscles that are supple and lean and a body that's well-connected. For those looking to build significant muscle size, combining Pilates with traditional strength training is the most effective strategy.

  • Can beginners really do reformer Pilates at home safely?

    Yes—with the right guidance!

Our Freedom On Demand beginner pathways are specifically designed to help you learn safely and progressively. We teach:

    • Reformer setup
    • Spring changes
    • Technique fundamentals
    • Movement confidence
    • How to modify exercises when needed

You’ll never feel like you’re being thrown into advanced workouts before you’re ready.
