Frequently asked questions

  • How long should I stay in an ice bath?

Most experts recommend between 2 and 10 minutes, depending on your tolerance, experience, and goals. If you're new to ice baths, start small and build up your tolerance gradually. If you feel dizzy, turn pale, or your limbs go numb these are signs of excessive cold exposure.

We recommend 2-3 sessions per week to promote muscle recovery, reduce inflammation, and build cold tolerance without overstressing the body.

  • What are the ice bath dimensions?

Our ice bath is 160cm long x 100cm wide x 70cm high. It holds approx 600 litres.

  • How does the ice bath with chiller unit work?

The chiller unit connects to the ice bath via pipes, circulating water out of the bath and through the unit to progressively cool it. As an added benefit, the water is continuously circulated to prevent stagnation and passes through a filter to remove debris (such as grass) after use.

  • Do I need the chiller, or can I just use ice?

Ice works, but it's inconsistent and adds up in cost and effort over time. The chiller maintains your target temperature between sessions without any input — removing the friction that causes most people to skip plunges when life gets busy. If you're committing to cold therapy as a regular practice, the chiller is worth it.

  • What makes the Freedom Ice Bath different from a cold shower or DIY setup?

Chest-deep immersion is where research shows the full benefits occur — a shower doesn't replicate this. The double-walled insulation holds temperature without constant ice top-ups, the two-person tub allows proper immersion, and the quick-drain makes cleaning easy. Paired with the chiller, you get consistent temperature year-round without the hassle of DIY setups.

  • What temperature should the water be, and how long should I stay in?

Research points to 10–15°C as the sweet spot — cold enough to trigger a full physiological response without unnecessary risk. For duration, 2–5 minutes covers most evidence-backed benefits. Beginners should start short and build gradually. The Freedom chiller gives you precise control so you're not guessing.

  • Does an ice bath help with recovery after exercise?

It depends on your goal. Cold immersion reduces inflammation and soreness effectively — useful for back-to-back training or endurance sport. However, if muscle growth is the priority, some research suggests immersing immediately after resistance training may blunt hypertrophy. Use it strategically rather than as a blanket post-workout habit.

  • What are the mental health and mood benefits of regular cold water immersion?

A 2025 systematic review and meta-analysis found regular cold water immersion may reduce stress, improve sleep, and increase quality of life. Research also shows improvements in mood, alertness, and self-esteem immediately following immersion. The maximum response appears to occur at water temperatures between 10–15°C.

  • What actually happens to your body when you get into cold water?

Your sympathetic nervous system activates immediately, triggering a measurable neurochemical response — dopamine rises, norepinephrine spikes, and cortisol begins to drop. The result is heightened clarity and calm that most people describe as unlike anything else. This is physiological, not placebo.

  • What electrical circuit do I need?

Less than most people expect. A 1-person infrared sauna fits in roughly 1m x 1m — a spare room, garage corner, or covered outdoor area works. Smaller (1 & 2 person infrared models) plug into a standard 10amp household outlet. Larger units and traditional saunas may need a15amp plug or larger - contact us to find out more.

  • How do I keep the water clean between uses?

Add a small amount of food-grade hydrogen peroxide or a purpose-made cold tub sanitiser between sessions. With solo daily use, a full water change every one to two weeks is typical. The quick-drain system makes this straightforward, and the rubber construction wipes down easily.
